Get to know the Shaker lands
The Church Family was the first community established in Watervliet in 1776 and was one out of four families in the area. Here the Shakers lived and worked cooperatively until 1925, when the land was purchased by the Albany County.
The Church Family property includes the nine remaining Shaker structures available for public visitation. The grounds feature an Herb Garden, the Apple Orchard, the Ann Lee Pond Preserve, and the Shaker Cemetery where Mother Ann Lee is buried. The 1848 Meeting House is home for the Shaker Heritage Society since 1977. The Society leases a number of buildings from the Albany County, which continues to own the site.
The Watervliet Shaker Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and includes three Shaker communities in the Albany area: the Church Family, whose grounds are open to the public, and the West and South Families, both privately owned.
The 1842 drawing attributed to Henry Blinn "The Plan of Watervliet N.Y." provides a schematic layout and inventory of the buildings of the four families in Watervliet: Church or 1st Order of the Church; North or 2nd Order of the Church; West or 2nd Family; and South or Gathering Family. The overlay positions the families on their actual geographic location.
